Assamese Wedding Ceremony Part – One

Assam is another important province of the Indian Republic which lies to the north-east of the country.Assam is known all over for its wild life, exotic natural landscapes and wonderful freshness. The simple-natured Assamese people are also known for the way they celebrate their festivals and other occasions. But when it comes to their wedding ceremony, their enthusiasm knows no limits then.The Pre-wedding rituals of the Assamese wedding ceremony take place in the following manner: -</span

Juran Ceremony
This ceremony takes place two days prior to the final wedding day at the bride’s place. This function is exclusively meant for women and it is mainly attended by the women of both the sides. The groom’s mother along with some of her close relatives visits the bride’s house. The bride’s mother greets them and gives them a hearty welcome with the xhorai, a brass plate with a stem. It consists of betel nut and betel leaves, which are covered with a gamocha, a fine linen cloth used for wiping body and face.

Tel Diya Custom
Tel Diya custom is the main pre wedding ceremony. In this ritual, the bridegroom’s mother puts a ring and betel on her daughter-in-law’s hair parting. Also, she pours oil that she usually brings with her. Thereafter, she applies sindoor i.e. sacred vermillion and presents the bride with her wedding trousseau. This wedding trousseau includes wedding garments, undergarments and accessories and cosmetics. It also includes ‘mekhla chadar’, the traditional Assamese dress worn by the women on these occasions.

Pani Tola & Nuani Tradition
Pani Tola is the traditional custom observed on the wedding occasion in which gathering of holy water by the bride and groom’s mother, which is later used for the bride’s ceremonial bath.
Nuani tradition involves anointing and bathing the bride to help her get ready for her wedding ceremony. Only after the completion of this tradition the bride is allowed to get ready for the final wedding function. She gets prepared with all sorts of required materials which are provided to her from her parents or her in-laws. In modern context, the bride gets the attention and assistance of the professional beauticians. She either visits the beautician or the beautician is called at the bride’s place.
